In close consultation with the KFFÖ, a bespoke database model was implemented in stages. Using agile development methods, the development process was continuously coordinated with the client, and the individual modules (e.g. user management, bat database, membership management, role and permissions management) were adapted where necessary. A process for identifying bat species issues a warning when similar species are detected and, by asking additional questions, ensures that observers or data entry staff identify the correct species.
Since its initial implementation, the system has been continuously refined. To ensure that it not only remains up to date in terms of functionality but also provides the necessary security, regular updates and upgrades are carried out on the frameworks and components used.
The central portal, implemented using Python and Django, is web-based and aptly named ElisABat (Electronic information system on Austrian Bats).
